Review

A family-run lodge in the heart of the southern Pantanal, Barra Mansa is one of the more difficult lodges to reach in the Pantanal but for that reason it is one of the most rewarding. Set on the banks of the Rio Negro, Barra Mansa’s remote waterside location makes it one of the best places for wildlife viewing and also one of the best places to gain an insight into traditional ways of life in the Pantanal. This coupled with the private guides, warm hospitality and service makes it one of the most special places to stay in the region.

Barra Mansa is located on the banks of the Rio Negro in the southern Pantanal where the river and the floodplains of the Vazante do Castelo meet. When the floodwaters recede this gives way to grassy plains and white sandy riverbanks where you can see an extraordinary range of breeding birds and wildlife roaming wild. The lodge is an hour’s flight from Campo Grande in a private plane or a five hour car journey by road in the dry season.

Small and family-run, Barra Mansa can only welcome up to 17 guests at any one time. The lodge’s 8 rooms are simple in style but are installed with air conditioning, fans and hot water showers. They also come with a hammock for relaxing on your terrace between excursions.

The focus at Barra Mansa is ultimately on the activities, with privately guided excursions and some of the most attentive service in the Pantanal. The wide range of activities range from boat and canoeing trips on the river through to fishing, bird watching, horse riding, jeep safaris and helping out with daily activities on the fazenda; managing horses and cattle, harvesting vegetables in the organic garden and looking after the animals.

Other features include a private landing strip, orchard, library, dining room and bar. Guests are treated to authentic dishes from the Pantanal made with local ingredients or those grown in the organic garden and cooked on a wood-fired stove.

Privately-guided excursions, great service.

The more remote a lodge, the more expensive it is to reach it.
